LIEUTENANT-GOVERNOR APPOINTMENT

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of the
Honourable Iona Campagnolo as Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia .
Ms Campagnolo is the first woman to be appointed Lieutenant Governor of the
province. She is also the 7th woman that the Prime Minister has appointed
Lieutenant Governor of the10 such appointments that he has made since taking
office.

The Honourable Iona V. Campagnolo,
P.C., C.M., O.B.C.
Iona Campagnolo is one of British Columbia’s
most distinguished citizens. She is widely known and respected across Canada for
her achievements in public life, as an educator and as a broadcaster and
commentator on public affairs. She is the first woman to be appointed Lieutenant
Governor of British Columbia.
Ms. Campagnolo first came to provincial and
national prominence as a civic leader in Prince Rupert and as broadcaster with
Skeena Broadcasters Radio. In recognition of her extensive work as a community
promoter and activist, she was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1973.
From 1974-79, she served as the federal Member of
Parliament for the riding of Skeena. From 1976-79 she served in Cabinet as the
first Minister of Fitness and Amateur Sport.
From 1979 to present, Ms. Campagnolo has been a
Commentator- Panelist on The Editors, a US. Public Television public
affairs show and with Capital Connection, a program focusing on
Canada-US. relations that is produced by World Affairs. From 1980-82, she hosted
the CBC television program One of a Kind.
From 1992 to 1998, Ms. Campagnolo was founding
Chancellor of the University of Northern British Columbia. Since 1993, she has
been a Director with the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic
Development. Since 1996, she has been a Director with the Arctic Institute of
North America. And since 1997, she has been Chair of the Fraser Basin Council,
which promotes the economic, environmental and social sustainability of the
Fraser Basin.
In addition to the Order of Canada, Ms.
Campagnolo has received honourary doctorates from Simon Fraser University, Brock
University and the University of Northern British Columbia. In 1998, she was
named to the Order of British Columbia. And she has received names from the
Haida and Tsimshian nations.
Ms. Campagnolo is 68 years of age.
