Fact of the week In September, 1891, Vasyl Eleniak and Ivan Pylypiw – Canada's first recorded Ukrainian immigrants – arrived at Montreal and made their way west to Canada's Prairies. Their letters home describing wonderful farming conditions encouraged other Ukrainians to follow them. Between 1891 and 1914 about 170 000 Ukrainians homesteaders settled in Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan, making a major contribution to the growth of farming in the West.
