 Summit of the Americas 2001

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

December 14, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today issued the following statement on the United States Presidential election:

"All Canadians join me in congratulating President-elect George W. Bush. I look forward to meeting with him at the earliest opportunity.

Canada and the United States have a relationship unique in the world: We are good friends, allies, and close economic partners, with the largest trading relationship on the globe. I look forward to working with President-elect Bush to continue building on that relationship and to identify new ways of achieving our shared goals.

One important opportunity for cooperation will be next April’s Summit of the Americas in Quebec City, where we will join our partners in the Americas to promote democracy, prosperity, and social equity in our hemisphere."
