CAROLE TAYLOR

Carole Taylor is well-known and respected across Canada for her accomplishments in the fields of broadcasting, politics and public service.

Starting in television during her teens with the nationally syndicated show After Four, Carole Taylor then became part of the first co-hosting duo of CTV’s morning show Canada AM. In 1973, she became the first woman to host another one of Canada’s most recognized television shows, W5. In this capacity, she covered Canada’s national political scene and travelled the world to report on the burning issues of the day.

Throughout her busy career in the media, which spread to the fields of radio and newspaper, Carole Taylor always had a deep interest in the welfare of Canadians. In 1986, she followed-up on that interest by seeking and winning a seat as an independent alderman in the city of Vancouver. She then chaired, among others, the region’s hospital district, the Neighbourhood, Cultural and Community Services Committee and the Mayor’s Task Force on Children, recommending the hiring of a permanent Children’s Advocate.

In 1997, after a two-year tenure as Vice Chair, she assumed the role of Chair of the Vancouver Port Corporation (VPC). She also served as Chair of the Canada Ports Corporation. In her capacity as Chair of the VPC, she worked tirelessly to make sure that the Corporation and the surrounding municipalities worked together to ensure the health of the port business, which employs almost 11,000 people and puts more than a billion dollars into the B.C. economy every year.

Carole Taylor has also served on the Board of Directors of Ontario Place, Rogers Cable, BCIT, HSBC Bank, Canadian Pacific Ltd., the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Vancouver Public Library, and the B.C. Children’s Hospital. She currently chairs the Vancouver Board of Trade.

Carole Taylor has always remained a very active member of her community, contributing with energy and enthusiasm to the community and fundraising activities of many social service and cultural organizations such as the United Way, B.C.’s Children’s Hospital, S.U.C.C.E.S.S., Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House and the Heart Foundation.

Carole Taylor was born in 1945. She and her husband, Art Phillips, have two children.
