STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

July 18, 2002
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien tonight issued this statement expressing his deep sadness at the news of the crash of a Canadian Forces helicopter in Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador:

"My first thoughts on this tragic news are with the families of the two members of the Canadian forces who have perished while on a search and rescue operation in Newfoundland and Labrador. I also want to offer my prayers for the full recovery of the two injured men during this mission.

Mere words are of small solace at times like this. Yet it is my hope that some comfort may be found by the families knowing that their loved ones died as heroes on a rescue mission. Once again we are reminded that our members of the Canadian Forces always stand to make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the safety and security of all Canadians.

Aline joins me in extending our deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives in this terrible accident."
