Prime Minister Announces New Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Food Agency

April 5, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of Dr. André Gravel as Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, effective immediately.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency was officially established by an Act of Parliament on April 1, 1997. The Agency was created to consolidate all federally-mandated food inspection and quarantine services formerly provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Health Canada, Industry Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Dr. Gravel, a doctor of veterinary medicine, is currently Vice-President of Programs with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, a position he has held since the Agency’s creation in 1997. As Vice-President of Programs, Dr. Gravel is responsible for policy development, programs and science strategy. Prior to assuming his current position in April 1997, Dr. Gravel was Director General of the Animal and Plant Health Directorate with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. His past experience includes serving as Director of the Meat and Poultry Products Division, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and as Director of Veterinary Services with the Quebec Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
