STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

February 5, 2003
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Chrétien issued the following statement upon hearing the news of the death of jazz great, Charlie Biddle:

"Charlie Biddle, a Canadian pioneer of jazz music, was an Order of Canada recipient. His personality, charisma and talent helped to make Montreal an icon for jazz, all over the world. Mr. Biddle’s extraordinary talent as a bassist, and his work as a promoter, made him a legend of his time. I know that his passing will deeply affect jazz enthusiasts and indeed all Canadians alike.

Aline joins me in extending our most heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Constance, and their four children. I hope that they may find some solace in the knowledge that he will always occupy a prominent place in Canada’s cultural heritage."
