STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

September 18, 2001
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed his deep sadness at the news of the death of Claudine Vallerand:

"Claudine Vallerand was a pioneer of television programming in Canada. The universe she created with the help of her unforgettable character, Maman Fonfon, remains to this day an example of children’s programming at its best. Combining creativity, playfulness and a passion for learning, her show enthralled its young viewers. As we mourn Ms. Vallerand’s passing, so too does the little child in all of us who had the pleasure of seeing her on television.

Aline joins me in offering, on behalf of all Canadians, our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Claudine Vallerand. I hope that they can find some comfort in the knowledge that she will always occupy a prominent place in Canada’s cultural heritage."
