STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

June 10, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued this statement today on learning of the death of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad:

"President Assad was, to a great extent, the architect of modern Syria. Under his leadership, Syria has played a key role in the Middle East.

I was warmly received by President Assad on my recent visit to Damascus. During our discussions, I was struck by his commitment to the search for a just, durable and comprehensive peace in the Middle East. This was clear both during my visit in April and as late as eleven days ago in a private telephone conversation. While the peace efforts of Syria and Israel have yet to be successful, I hope that the successor to President Assad will persevere towards the conclusion of peace with Israel.

On behalf of all Canadians, Aline and I offer our profound condolences to the people of Syria and to the family of the President."
