Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his sadness at the news of the
death of Henri Bergeron:
"Henri Bergeron was not only a television pioneer in Canada, he was,
above all, one of the great ambassadors of the French language throughout
the country.
As the first broadcaster on the first Francophone radio station in
Western Canada and the first television host in the country, Henri Bergeron
had already, early in his career, left an indelible mark on the Canadian
media. Over the years, and with his descriptions of some of the most
important events of his time, he became a pillar of French language
television. And with his almost twenty years at the helm of Beaux
Dimanches, Henri Bergeron earned a place in the lives of millions of
Canadians who shared his passion for culture.
In addition to Henri Bergeron’s extraordinary professional achievements,
Canadians will also remember this Franco-Manitoban’s passion for the
French language, a passion that echoed in his every word. Even today, his
work remains an example and a source of inspiration for us all. He will be
greatly missed.
On behalf of all Canadians, Aline joins me in extending our sincerest
condolences to the family and friends of Henri Bergeron. We hope that they
can take some comfort from the knowledge that his proud heritage will be
there for us for years to come."
