STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

September 18, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed his sadness today following the news of the death of former journalist Jean-V. Dufresne:

"Throughout his long career in journalism, Jean-V. Dufresne stood out for his professionalism and integrity. Moved by a generous vision of society, he was always a voice for openness, respect and tolerance in all the great debates of his time.

His love for the French language imbued his work, as did his deep sense of ethics and his desire to make a positive contribution to our society. These qualities, more than his remarkable talent alone, are what elevated him to the very top of his profession and earned him the esteem and affection of all his colleagues and readers. His voice has been missed since his retirement in 1995 and his death leaves a tremendous void.

Aline joins me in offering, on behalf of all Canadians, our deepest condolences to his son, Alexis, as well as to his family."
