STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

July 17, 2003
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed the condolences of all Canadians following the passing of Carol Shields:

"Today we mourn the passing of one of the bright lights of Canadian literature. An extremely gifted author and educator, Carol Shields garnered some of the world's most prestigious literary awards for her poetry and prose. Her eloquent works are a testament to her compassion, her humour, and her lifelong love of the written word. The mother of five and Chancellor of the University of Winnipeg, Carol Shields made extraordinary contributions to Canadian life.

Aline joins me in our expression of deepest sympathy to her family and friends. Our prayers are with you during this difficult time."
