STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

May 13, 2003
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien expressed the condolences of all Canadians following the passing of former Nova Scotia premier, John Savage:

"John Savage was a leader of principle and vision. His work as a doctor, community leader, and politician was a testament to his humanitarian values. He was not swayed by opinion, but guided by a mission to make the world a better place. His dedication and service to others was recognized and honoured by many. He was an Officer of the Order of Canada, a recipient of the Order of Nova Scotia, and also a recipient of the Canadian Red Cross humanitarian award in recognition of his work to eradicate poverty and disease in Africa. His contributions to improve the health and well-being of people in Nova Scotia, in Canada, and indeed, in countries far beyond our borders, will always be remembered.

Aline joins me in our expression of deepest sympathy for his children who have also suffered the loss of their mother in recent months. Our prayers are with you during this difficult time."
