STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

February 2, 2001
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his sadness at the news of the untimely death of Canadian Olympic Association Chief Executive Officer Carol Anne Letheren:

"I was deeply shocked to learn of Carol Anne Letheren’s sudden death. Her outstanding abilities and achievements as an executive at the very highest levels of international sport have made her synonymous with the Olympic movement in Canada. And as spokesperson and advocate she was always an excellent ambassador for Canada. Her loss is a blow to the Canadian Olympic movement that will be felt for years to come.

On a personal note, I know that Aline was deeply impressed by her skill and touched by her hospitality during the Sydney Olympics when they worked together to promote Toronto’s bid for the 2008 Olympics. On behalf of Aline and the people of Canada, I extend our deepest condolences to Carol Anne Letheren’s family and many friends."
