STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

February 10, 2003
Ottawa,Ontario

Prime Minister Chrétien issued the following statement upon hearing the news of the death of Marcel Desjardins, Deputy Publisher of La Presse:

"It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of Marcel Desjardins. I know that his sudden passing is a terrible blow to his family, friends and colleagues. His distinguished career is a testament to his invaluable contribution to journalism and public life in Quebec and in Canada. We will not forget his dynamic personality and his extraordinary talent. I remember him fondly from his years as a parliamentary correspondent in the House of Commons. Aline joins me in extending our most heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Micheline, and their three children, as well as to his friends and colleagues during this most difficult time."
