STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

October 1, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued this statement today following the news of the death of the Prime Minister of Dominica Roosevelt Douglas:

"Prime Minister Douglas was a man of great conviction who dedicated many years of his life to improving relations between people of all origins. His relentless pursuit of social justice and equality brought him to many foreign lands, including Canada - a country that he considered his second home. Since his election as Prime Minister of Dominica last January, he dedicated his talents to helping his country meet the challenges of globalization, using the numerous relationships he developed around the world to benefit the people of Dominica. His sudden passing is a great loss for his country and for his many friends.

Aline joins me in offering, on behalf of all Canadians, our sincere condolences to the family of Prime Minister Douglas and to the people of Dominica."
