PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF TWO FRANCOPHONES AS CHIEF JUSTICES

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that Her Excellency the Governor General has approved his recommendation that the Honourable Ernest Drapeau be appointed Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal of New-Brunswick and that the Honourable Marc M. Monnin be appointed Chief Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba.

Chief Justice Drapeau has served since 1998 as judge of the Court of Appeal of New Brunswick. He graduated in law from the University of New Brunswick and was admitted to the Bar of New Brunswick in 1974. He first practised law with the firm of Savoie & Drapeau and then with the firm of Drapeau, Robichaud & McNally.

Chief Justice Monnin has been a judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba since 1997. He graduated in law from the University of Manitoba in 1977 and was called to the Bar of Manitoba in 1978. As a lawyer he was a partner at the firm of Aitkins, MacAulay & Thorvaldson and was also a part-time lecturer at the University of Manitoba.

 

These appointments are effective immediately.
