Statement by the Prime Minister

April 13, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued the following statement today following Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire’s announcement of his early retirement from the Canadian Forces:

"Over a truly distinguished career that spanned 35 years in Canada’s military, Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire was a shining example – to his peers in the Armed Forces and to all Canadians – of dedication, courage and selflessness.

Though I regret his early retirement, it is certainly understandable given the tragic and appalling events he witnessed in Rwanda. Even under such trying circumstances, he kept faith with his duty and continued to serve his country with honour and distinction. Canadians will always be proud to have had Lieutenant-General Dallaire carry our flag at home and abroad.

On behalf of a thankful nation, I wish Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire a peaceful retirement and the best possible recovery in the years to come."
