STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

September 16, 2002
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued this statement today on the death of the Hon. Dr. George Stanley:

"I was very saddened to learn of the death of George Stanley - a distinguished Canadian, Rhodes scholar, author, retired Lieutenant Colonel and former Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick.

Dr. Stanley devoted his entire life to his country and to public service. Best remembered for his involvement with the design of our Maple Leaf flag, it is clear that his influence and knowledge contributed to the elaboration of our most cherished national symbol. A veteran of World War II, with a military career spanning 27 years, he also published more than 28 books, was awarded 18 degrees from various universities across the country and was decorated twice with the Order of Canada.

Aline joins me in offering, on behalf of all Canadians, our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to Dr. Stanley’s family and many friends."
