 Summit of the Americas 2001

CHANCELLOR OF GERMANY TO VISIT CANADA

June 21, 2002
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that Gerhard Schröder, Chancellor of Germany, will make an official visit to Canada from June 23 to 25, 2002.

"It gives me great pleasure to welcome Chancellor Schröder to Canada," said the Prime Minister. "Germany is a strategic partner for Canada within the European Union. It is also a key ally in the G8, NATO, the United Nations and in the war against terrorism. I welcome this opportunity to build upon the strength of our relations, especially at a time when events around the world demand even closer cooperation and collaboration among nations."

In Ottawa, the Chancellor will meet with the Prime Minister and the Governor General. On June 25, he will deliver the keynote address at the Conférence de Montréal, an international forum held annually on the new economy. Following the official visit, the Chancellor will participate in the G8 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta on June 26 and 27.

The Prime Minister met most recently with the Chancellor at the NATO-Russia Summit in Rome in May 2002 and during the first Team Canada trade mission to Germany in February. Germany is the world's 3rd largest economy and is one of Canada's most important business partners. In 2001, two-way trade was valued at almost $11 billion, making Germany Canada’s 6th largest trading partner. German investment in Canada has reached nearly $6 billion, ranking Germany 7th among international investors. This year, Canada and Germany celebrate the 30th anniversary of intensive cooperation in science and technology – the most promising aspect of our bilateral relationship.
