PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES NEW CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT OF
NEWFOUNDLAND - TRIAL DIVISION

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today the appointment of the Honourable Mr. Justice J. Derek Green, a Judge of the Court of Appeal of Newfoundland, as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, Trial Division. He replaces the Honourable T.A. Hickman who retires from that position on October 19, 2000.

Mr. Justice Green received a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours from Memorial University in 1968. He is a former Rhodes Scholar for Newfoundland. He received a Bachelor of Civil Law in 1973 and a Master of Arts in 1976, both from Oxford University. Mr. Justice Green was appointed to the Supreme Court of Newfoundland in 1992 and to the Newfoundland Court of Appeal in 1996. He was called to the Newfoundland Bar in 1974.

This appointment is effective October 19, 2000.
