 Summit of the Americas 2001

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

June 14, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today welcomed the conclusion of the Inter-Korean Summit held in Pyongyang between President Kim Dae-jung of the Republic of Korea and the leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea, Kim Jong-il, June 13-15:

"This Summit is an historic step in a long process that will one day see the reintegration of North Korea into all aspects of international relations — social, political and economic. The holding of this event demonstrates the goodwill of both Kim Dae-jung and Kim Jong-il and we wish them continued success in their efforts to bring about mutual understanding, peace and security on the Korean Peninsula.

We look forward to the ongoing dialogue that has been so ably begun by these two leaders."
