STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

June 19, 2002
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today issued this statement expressing the shock and outrage of Canadians following the recent terrorist attacks in Jerusalem, which claimed the lives of over twenty innocent Israelis, including many young people:

"Canadians are horrified by these brutal attacks. They seek not only to destroy innocent lives, but are clearly aimed at derailing all efforts to achieve a lasting resolution to the conflict. They must not be allowed to succeed. G8 leaders will review the prospects for peace in the region next week in Kananaskis during our discussions of international issues.

Canada strongly condemns these terrorist attacks and urges all who truly seek peace to call an end to them. No cause can justify these terrible acts and no resolution can be achieved through violent means.

Aline joins me in expressing our deepest condolences to the surviving victims, to the families who have lost loved ones, and to the Israeli people."
