PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES NEW CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND – TRIAL DIVISION.

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of the Honorable Armand DesRoches of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island, Trial Division. He replaces the Honourable Kenneth R. MacDonald who retired from that position on August 31, 2001.

Chief Justice DesRoches was born and educated in Miscouche, Prince Edward Island. In 1966, he received a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University, Halifax and was admitted to the Bar of Prince Edward Island the following year. During his years in practice, Chief Justice DesRoches held various positions in the Office of the Judge Advocate General in Ottawa including having served as Chief Military Judge. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island - Trial Division in 1991.

This appointment is effective September 1, 2001.
