THE PRIME MINISTER CONGRATULATES PHILIPPE KIRSCH, PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT (ICC)

March 12, 2003
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien extended his warmest congratulations to Philippe Kirsch, elected as first President of the International Criminal Court.

"On behalf of all Canadians I congratulate Philippe Kirsch on his recent election as President of the International Criminal Court. It is a great honour that reflects the high esteem in which he is held by his fellow judges of the Court.

Canada has been committed from the first to the establishment of an International Criminal Court and we are very proud that the leadership and outstanding ability of Judge Kirsch has been recognized by his peers. Judge Kirsch was instrumental in the establishment of the court. As an internationally-renowned expert in international and humanitarian law, I know that Judge Kirsch will serve the Court with the same devotion and excellence with which he has served Canada."
