Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Rafik Al-Hariri will visit Ottawa from April 29th to May 1st, 2001. Prime Minister Al-Hariri will lead a delegation of five Ministers.

"I am very concerned about the recent confrontations which have raised tensions in the Middle East", said the Prime Minister. " Prime Minister Hariri and I will discuss the situation, including how Canada and the international community can play a positive role."

The two leaders will also discuss planning for the upcoming Sommet de la Francophonie, which Lebanon will host from October 26 to 28, in Beirut. Canada was the host country of the last Sommet de la Francophonie which took place in Moncton, New Brunswick, in September 1999.

During his visit, Prime Minister Hariri and his delegation will hold discussions with their Canadian counterparts on bilateral issues, including trade and investment. Prime Minister Hariri will also meet Members of Parliament and Canadian business leaders.
