STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

June 16, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his deep sadness at the news of the death of former Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta, Grant MacEwan:

"Canada has lost one of its most beloved and energetic personalities. Grant MacEwan was enormously gifted; someone whose sophistication and intellect never belied his abiding common touch. As Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta, he brought a homespun wit and charm to the position along with the grace and demeanour of a true gentleman. His devotion to education and to the conservation of Canada's natural beauty were passions he pursued with singular vigour and persuasiveness.

Aline joins me in extending our deepest condolences to the family of Grant MacEwan, and to the many people whose lives were touched by his wisdom."
