Statement by the Prime Minister

February 15, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed his sadness at the news of the death of former PEI Premier Angus MacLean:

"For three decades, Angus MacLean was a strong and effective voice for the people of Prince Edward Island. I got to know him best during his quarter century as an Island MP. While we naturally squared off on the opposite side of many issues, I always enjoyed his good humour and respected his dedication to his constituents. As Premier, Mr. MacLean was a fine exemplar of forceful and persuasive advocacy for one’s province going hand-in-hand with a broader national vision. He will be greatly missed.

Aline joins me in extending our deepest sympathies to the family of Angus MacLean and his many, many friends."
