STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

January 14, 2003
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien made the following statement at the news that this will be the last term in office for Toronto Mayor Mel Lastman.

"I have had the opportunity to work closely with Mayor Lastman over many years. No one can question his dedication and commitment to the people of Toronto. With charisma and his unique style, he has made an indelible difference to Canada’s largest city. For more than 34 years Mayor Lastman has been a devoted public servant.

A determined leader, Mayor Lastman has overseen many projects in his city. His contribution helped Toronto become a dynamic city that people with roots in 170 different countries of the world have come to call home.

Canada’s cities are the bright lights of our nation’s cultural landscape. The great city of Toronto sparkles, thanks in large part to the work of Mayor Mel Lastman."
