PRIME MINISTER WELCOMES POSITIVE DEVELOPMENTS IN MIDDLE EAST

June 30, 2003
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today issued this statement following the declaration of a cease-fire by Palestinian groups and Israel's withdrawal from parts of the Gaza Strip:

"Canada is encouraged by the positive developments of the past two days. These first significant steps in implementing the Roadmap have the potential to restore confidence and promote real progress toward peace. We do not underestimate the challenges that lie ahead, but the Roadmap holds the promise of a better future for all. Canada stands ready to assist in any way we can.

"The international community has a vital role to play. The personal efforts of President George W. Bush, King Abdullah and President Hosni Mubarak have been instrumental in getting the parties to where they are today. Canada hopes for constructive discussion at tomorrow's meeting between Prime Minister Sharon and Prime Minister Abbas, and continues to encourage both sides to put a definitive end to the violence that has devastated the region over the past 33 months."
