NEW CHIEF JUSTICE OF QUEBEC APPOINTED

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that the Honourable Mr. Justice J. J. Michel Robert, has been appointed Chief Justice of Quebec. He replaces the Honourable Mr. Justice Pierre A. Michaud who has chosen to become puisne judge of the Quebec Court of Appeal until September 1st, 2002.

Chief Justice Robert was appointed a judge of the Quebec Court of Appeal in 1995.

Chief Justice Robert graduated in law from the Université de Montréal in 1961, and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1962. He first practised civil litigation with the firm Tellier & Robert. In 1965, he joined the firm of Cutler, Lamer, Bellemare, Burns and Robert, with whom he practised civil litigation, criminal and labour law until 1968. From 1968 to 1990, he was a senior partner with the firm Robert, Dansereau, Barré, Marchessault & Lauzon. From 1990 to 1995, he practised mainly public law and commercial litigation with the firm of Langlois, Robert.

Between 1971 and 1980, Chief Justice Robert was a lecturer in civil liability and civil procedure at Université de Montréal Law School. Between 1975 and 1980, he lectured in administrative and labour law at the bar admission course sponsored by the Quebec Bar Association. He has co-authored several books and articles. He has also been President of the Quebec Bar Association and appointed Q.C. in 1982.
