CANADA AND THE NETHERLANDS
COMMIT TO FURTHER STRENGTHENING THEIR RELATIONS

September 23, 2003
New York City, United States

Prime Minister Chrétien and Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende today signed a Joint Declaration on the Strengthening of the Bilateral Relations between the Government of Canada and the Government of The Netherlands that will enhance all aspects of the bilateral relationship, including political, commercial and people to people ties. A Canada-Netherlands Understanding on Youth Exchanges was also signed.

The leaders endorsed the agreements following a bilateral meeting held on the margins of the 58th United Nations General Assembly, which is taking place in New York City from September 22 to 29.

"This Joint Declaration will galvanize the close and multi-faceted relations that already exist between our countries through expanded dialogue and greater focus", said Prime Minister Chrétien. "I am particularly pleased that young people will be able to experience the unique cultures of both countries, gain valuable international work experience and make their own contribution to our evolving partnership."

The measures announced today are being undertaken within the framework of "Nouvel Élan", a Dutch-Canadian initiative designed to give fresh impetus and depth to the bilateral relationship.

    NEW CANADA-NETHERLANDS AGREEMENTS
Background

The Joint Declaration on the Strengthening of the Bilateral Relations between the Government of Canada and the Government of The Netherlands recognizes the special bonds between the two countries and commits both nations to enhancing political, economic and cultural ties through expanded dialogue and consultations. The Declaration will also facilitate bilateral co-operation in new areas such as science and technology, trade and development, immigration and international security.

The Canada-Netherlands Understanding on Youth Exchanges fosters further opportunities for young people from Canada and the Netherlands to participate in transatlantic exchanges during which they can work and/or travel. Exchanges often provide youth with valuable work skills that are required in today's global economy. Youth mobility programs allow young people to connect and to forge lasting ties.
