PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES NEW COMMISSIONER
OF CORRECTIONAL SERVICE OF CANADA

August 11, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of Lucie McClung, currently Assistant Secretary, Priorities and Planning with the Privy Council Office as the new Commissioner of Corrections. She succeeds Ole Ingstrup who will be leaving the Public Service on September 8, 2000.

The Correctional Service of Canada, as part of the criminal justice system and respecting the rule of law, contributes to the protection of society by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control.

The Prime Minister took this opportunity to thank Mr. Ingstrup for his dedication and service over the years as Commissioner of Corrections, and to wish him well in his future endeavours.
