Statement by the Prime Minister on the resignation of Bob Rae

January 13, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued this statement following the announcement today that Bob Rae will step down as Leader of the Ontario NDP.

"I have known Bob Rae for three decades. We have worked together as fellow MPs and as fellow first ministers.

Despite our different political affiliations, I have always considered Bob Rae an intelligent and articulate man with a sincere commitment to public service and to the people of Ontario and Canada. In particular, I have greatly admired his strong commitment to Canadian unity. He has made an important contribution to public life in this country and I am confident that he will continue to do so. I extend my best wishes for the future to him and his family."
