Pierrette Ringuette-Maltais appointed Assistant Deputy Chairman 
of Committees of the Whole

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of Pierrette Ringuette-Maltais as Assistant Deputy Chairman of Committees of the Whole.

"Ms. Ringuette-Maltais brings with her to the position valuable experience and insight gained while serving as Deputy Speaker in the New Brunswick legislature," said the Prime Minister. "I am pleased that she has accepted these new responsibilites."

The first francophone woman elected to the New Brunswick legislature, in 1987, Pierrette Ringuette-Maltais served as Deputy Speaker between 1987 and 1991. A businessperson and academic, Ms. Ringuette-Maltais is a former Executive Director of the Edmunston Chamber of Commerce and a lecturer at both the Université de Québec and the Université de Moncton.

Representing the federal riding of Madawaska-Victoria, Ms. Ringuette-Maltais is the first francophone woman from New Brunswick elected as Member of Parliament. She co-chaired the House of Commons Official Languages Committee.
