Newfoundland Judicial Appointment Announced

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the following appointment effective immediately:

The Honourable Mr. Justice James Randell Gushue of St. John's is appointed Chief Justice of Newfoundland. He replaces Chief Justice N. Goodridge who has chosen to be a supernumerary judge.

Chief Justice Gushue has served as a justice of Newfoundland Court of Appeal since 1976.

Chief Justice Gushue graduated from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar in 1959 and was admitted to the Bar of Newfoundland in 1960. Prior to his appointment to the Bench, he practised law with the firm of Stirling, Ryan, Goodridge and Gushue in St. John's.
