International Day for the Elimination of racial discrimination

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued the following statement
today to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial
Discrimination, March 21, 1996:
"This year, on March 21st, Canadians are standing together
in the spirit of solidarity and hope. On this International Day
for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, I call on all Canadians
to join together, so that we can continue to build a nation where
peace, respect and justice prevail.
We must ensure that Canadians have the opportunity to flourish,
to become full participants in society, to have access to their
rights and to be able to assume their responsibilities. We all
have a share in the process. That is a crucial responsibility
for Canada and Canadians, for our institutions and for individuals:
to promote the kind of society that welcomes the contributions
of all its citizens.
Our government is working in partnership with the provinces, municipalities,
the private sector and community organizations to support local
programs that fight racism. We are also sponsoring a national
public education campaign to raise awareness of the problem of
racial discrimination.
The symbol for this year's campaign is the crocus -- the first
flower of spring. It is a symbol of renewal -- of hope. I know
Canadians will join me in working every day to ensure that we
continue to strive for respect and accommodation of our diverse
people."
