April 4, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Chrétien has expressed his sorrow at the news of the tragic loss of US Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown and the members of his official delegation in a plane crash yesterday near Dubrovnik, Croatia.

The Prime Minister said, "During his tenure at the Department of Commerce, Secretary Brown developed many close friends among Canadian Ministers and officials. His achievements in developing the United States' international trade relations will be a lasting legacy for the benefit of the international community. He will be sorely missed."

In a letter to Mrs. Alma Brown, the Prime Minister offered his deep condolences and praised Secretary Brown for his outstanding contribution to the development of relations with Canada. The Prime Minister asked President Clinton to convey his sincere sympathy to the families of all those accompanying Secretary Brown on this flight.
