President of Senegal to Visit Canada

April 29, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that the President of Senegal, His Excellency Abdou Diouf, will visit Canada May 1-4.

"This visit will help further strengthen Canada's ties with Senegal and will enable us to discuss common issues such as trade opportunities, Francophonie and democratization in Africa," said the Prime Minister.

While in Ottawa, the President will hold talks with Governor General Roméo LeBlanc and with the Minister for International Cooperation and Minister responsible for Francophonie, Pierre S. Pettigrew. He will also receive an honourary degree from the University of Ottawa. On May 3, President Diouf will be in Montreal to meet with Quebec government representatives, the Senegalese community and Canadian firms doing business in Senegal. In the evening, he flies to Quebec City, where he will meet with Premier Bouchard. On May 4, he will travel to Moncton to meet with New Brunswick Premier Frank McKenna and other government officials.
