May 1, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of the Honourable Benoît Bouchard as Chair and member of the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board.

"Benoît Bouchard has been an outstanding representative of our country in Paris," said the Prime Minister. "The government is pleased that he has agreed to take on this new reponsibility."

Mr. Bouchard is currently Canada's Ambassador to France. He served in several senior cabinet positions from 1984 to 1993, including Secretary of State, Employment and Immigration, Transport, Industry, and Health.

"Mr. Bouchard has had a long and distinguished career in public life," said Stéphane Dion, President of the Privy Council and minister responsible for the Board. "As a former Transport Minister, he is eminently qualified for this position."

The appointment is effective July 1, 1996.
