May 9, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario

Attached is the text of a letter sent today by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien to Premiers and territorial Government Leaders inviting them to a meeting on Thursday, June 20, and Friday, June 21, 1996, in Ottawa.

Logistical details will follow.

PMO Press Office: (613) 957-5555

Dear Premier:

I am writing to invite Premiers and Territorial Government Leaders to a private meeting in Ottawa starting the afternoon of June 20 and closing the end of day on June 21. As set out in the Speech from the Throne, this occasion will provide an opportunity to focus particularly on economic and social issues of importance to Canadians.

Consistent with my government's commitment to partnership, the Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, is in the process of consulting your government on how best to shape the agenda of the upcoming First Ministers' Meeting. After his tour is complete and he has reported to me, an agenda proposal will be forwarded to you.

Together we face the shared challenges of responding to Canadians' concerns about jobs, economic growth and the sustainability of social programs. Effective partnerships among our governments are instrumental in meeting these challenges, and in this spirit, I look forward to meeting with you in June.

Yours sincerely,
