Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day

June 19, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario

The following is the text of a message from Prime Minister Jean Chrétien on the occasion of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day.

"In an expression of community that has been repeated for more than a century, Francophone Canadians across the country are celebrating Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, which has also become the special day of all Quebecers.

Once again this year, we will celebrate Saint-Jean-Baptiste in a spirit of tolerance, generosity and openness to the world. These shared values of ours are the foundation of a society which is the envy of the world, and of which we have every reason to be proud.

I offer my best wishes to Quebecers and to all French Canadians on the occasion of this great event, which brings us together. Aline and I wish you a happy St-Jean-Baptiste Day."
