Canada Day

June 27, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister issued the following statement for Canada Day:

"It is a pleasure for me, as Prime Minister, to wish all Canadians a very happy 129th birthday.

Today, in every city, town and village, in teeming crowds or in the quiet company of family and friends, Canadians from all walks of life will come together to celebrate our proud heritage and the values that unite us as a nation.

There is so much to celebrate.

Canada is a young nation, but we have done truly great things. We have built a society in which respect for diversity and compassion prevail. With vision and persistence, we have built a prosperous, dynamic economy. Working together we have become the best country in the world.

Our special genius as a people has been our capacity to adapt to new circumstances and new realities without sacrificing our principles. Canada is a work in progress, constantly evolving, renewing and redefining itself to address the changing needs and aspirations of Canadians. This flexibility is the key to understanding our past and the guide to our common future.

In a few weeks, Canada's top athletes will represent their country at the Olympic Games. Their achievements are the result of years of hard work, sacrifice, and incredible determination. They want to be the best.

These remarkable young Canadians should serve as an example for all of us. Working together, as a team, we can prepare ourselves for the challenges of the 21st century. We can preserve our place as the best country in the world.

Canada Day offers us a chance to savour our good fortune as a country.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish all of you a most enjoyable and festive day."
