By-election victory of Sheila Copps

July 18, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien made the following statement tonight, following the by-election victory of Sheila Copps in Hamilton East:

"I wish to congratulate Sheila Copps on her new mandate from the people of Hamilton East. Sheila put herself through the ultimate test in a democratic system - subjecting herself and her actions to the verdict of her constituents. For a fourth time, the people of Hamilton East have given her a strong vote of confidence. They recognize that Sheila's honesty, intelligence, commitment and determination have served, and will continue to serve, their constituency - and all Canadians - well.

I look forward to Sheila's return to Parliament, and to welcoming her back to Cabinet."
