Quebec Judicial Appointment:

Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of the Honourable Lyse Lemieux of Montreal as Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Quebec. She replaces Chief Justice Lawrence Poitras, who is retiring.

Chief Justice Lemieux has been a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec since 1978 and was appointed Associate Chief Justice of that Court in November 1994. Prior to her appointment to the Bench, Chief Justice Lemieux was Associate Deputy Minister for civil and criminal litigation in the Ministère de la justice, in the Government of Quebec.

This appointment is effective August 31, 1996.
