Holiday Message from the Prime Minister

December 13, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario

The following is the text of a holiday message to all Canadians from Prime Minister Jean Chrétien:

Canada is a nation that has developed and evolved with a commitment to certain values that are important to the Canadian people -- values such as freedom, diversity, and equality. We also believe very strongly in the values of sharing and generosity toward others who are less fortunate.

As a nation, we have contributed generously to help people in developing countries. Within Canada, our social programs are designed to provide the most assistance to those who need it most. As individuals, Canadians are active in many volunteer community efforts to help those in need.

At this time of year, these efforts are especially important. Most of us have much to be thankful for. It is appropriate that we share our good fortune with others.

My family joins me in wishing all Canadians a safe and enjoyable holiday, and a happy new year.
