Statement by the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed shock and
deep sadness at the murder of six Red Cross workers at a hospital
compound in Chechnya this morning. He underlined that this deliberate
assassination of foreign aid workers is a serious violation of
international humanitarian law. Among the murdered is a Canadian
nurse, Nancy Malloy of Vancouver.
"Nancy Malloy died a heroine," said the Prime Minister.
"I want to express my admiration of her, as well as my deep
condolences to her mother, sister and her friends."
A Red Cross worker since 1985, she had previously worked in Zaire,
Ethiopia, the former Yugoslavia and Kuwait.
On behalf of all Canadians, the Prime Minister expressed the profound
hope that the perpetrators of this barbaric act will be found
and brought to justice.
