Prime Minister to visit Washington

February 3, 1997
Ottawa, Ontario

In response to an invitation from President Clinton, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien will make his first official visit to Washington from April 7 to 9.

The Prime Minister and the President intend to discuss a wide range of bilateral and international issues, focusing on how our exceptionally close and intricate ties can be deepened as we approach the next century. The Canada-United States economic relationship is the most active in the world, with two-way trade of approximately one billion dollars a day and one hundred million Canadians and Americans crossing the border each year.

President Clinton visited Ottawa in February 1995. Prime Minister Chrétien and the President have met on several other occasions, most recently at the November 1996 APEC Leaders' Meeting.
