Senior appointments announced
February 24, 1997
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointments
of Dr. Arthur Olson as President designate and Ron Doering as
Executive Vice-President designate of the Canadian Food Inspection
Agency.
Dr. Arthur Olson, currently Assistant Deputy Minister, Food Production
and Inspection, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, is a long-standing
proponent of the single food inspection concept. Mr. Ron Doering,
currently Executive Director, Office of the Food Inspection Systems,
has led the process of change required to establish the Agency.
The creation of a federal food inspection agency was announced
in the 1996 Speech from the Throne and the Budget. The Canadian
Food Inspection Agency will consolidate all federally-mandated
food inspection and quarantine services formerly provided by Agriculture
and Agri-Food Canada, Health Canada, Industry Canada and Fisheries
and Oceans Canada. The Agency will enhance the efficiency and
effectiveness of federal food inspection and quarantine services
as well as facilitate increased collaboration with the provinces
in the area of food safety, inspection and related activities.
These appointments are effective immediately.
