Warren Allmand named President of International Centre for Human Rights

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment
of Warren Allmand as President of the International Centre for
Human Rights and Democratic Development.
"Warren Allmand is one of those impressive public figures
who draws respect across party lines," said the Prime Minister.
"He is especially admired for his active and longstanding
commitment to human rights and other humanitarian causes, both
within Canada and abroad. I am delighted that one of Canada's
most experienced and respected parliamentarians has agreed to
take on this important responsibility."
The International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development
is an independent centre established by an Act of Parliament in
1988 which provides persons and organizations in other countries
with training, advice and research services to promote the observance
of human rights and the full participation of all citizens in
the democratic process. Mr. Allmand succeeds Edward Broadbent,
the centre's first president.
Mr. Allmand, the Member of Parliament for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce
since 1965, resigned his seat on February 24, 1997. The appointment

Warren Allmand
One of Canada's most experienced parliamentarians, Warren Allmand
is highly respected for his commitment to humanitarian causes.
Warren Allmand was born in Montreal on September 19, 1932. He
studied at Loyola College, St. Francis Xavier University, McGill
University, the University of Paris, and the Institute of Comparative
Law in Paris. He practised law in Montreal before he was elected
to the House of Commons in 1965 for the riding of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.
He has been re-elected in every subsequent election.
Mr. Allmand was named Solicitor General in 1972, Minister of Indian
Affairs and Northern Development in 1976, and Minister of Consumer
and Corporate Affairs in 1977.
During his long and distinguished public career, Mr. Allmand has
been recognized for his commitment to justice issues, human rights,
peace, disarmament, and aboriginal issues. He is currently a member
of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Human Rights, and
the Chair of Canadian Parliamentarians for Global Action. He has
been honoured by many organizations for his work: in 1990, he
received the World Peace Award from the World Federalists of Canada;
in 1996, he received an honorary degree from St. Francis Xavier
University.
